VERIZON HEADQUARTERS
COOLING TOWERS
This project was originally to provide repairs to the structural steel dunnage platform that supports six cooling tower for the Verizon Headquarters in Basking Ridge, NJ. Given the extent of the repairs needed and risk of replacing the steel with the towers in place, combined with the age of the existing towers, it became apparent that it would be more feasible and practical in the long run to replace the towers at the same time as the platform work. This transformed this relatively simple and seemingly low cost project into a much more complex and expensive undertaking.
Temporary cooling towers and pumps were put into place to keep the facility operational while the replacement work was occurring. The condenser water system operates 24x7 and cannot be shutdown; therefore construction was strategically planned for the winter months because the system can function with just two of the six cooling towers in operation. Rigging the towers required a very large crane due to the weight of the towers, as well as reach needed due to the height of their location.
